Topsy Turvy Cake ...1925

One of the great things about going to estate sales, yard sales and library book sales, is finding antique books and magazines. Two recent purchases were copies of American Cookery magazine, March and April 1925. I'll take a slight break from posting genealogy information, and share this recipe. This doesn't appear to be a Topsy Turvy Cake as today's version-where every layer is crooked, but instead  appears to be more like a sponge cake. Might have to try this - let me know if you try it :)

Topsy Turvy Cake

"Into a well-buttered frying pan put one cup of brown sugar, packing it well and evenly all over the bottom.
On this spread one cup of canned pineapple, or cherries, strawberries, apple sauce , ect.  Sprinkle with chopped walnuts, and pour over the batter: Beat the yolks of two eggs, add one cup of sugar, one cup of flour, sifted with a pinch of salt, and one teaspoon of baking powder, thinning out with a quarter cup of water.
Add any desired flavoring, and fold in the beaten whites of the two eggs. Bake like an ordinary sponge cake. Turn out and serve warm or cold with whipped cream over it."

Remembering Cincinatus C. Slay

photo  by Larry Van Horn
Birth:
May 18, 1843
Copiah County, Mississippi
Death: Dec. 31, 1864
near Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
Cincinatus was the son of Alexander Slay and Elizabeth McLean. Sibling to: Martha, Nathan Wesley (Capt.) Alexander Jr., Mary, Elizabeth, Norvell, Elijah (Capt.) Corydon, Leonidus, Alonzo Duncan, and twin sisters, Cornelia and Ophelia. All of his brothers served in the Civil War.

Cincinatus served as a Corporal in the CSA-Army of TN, 6th MS Infantry Co. F, known as the Crystal Springs Guards.

Originally, it was assumed by viewing his tombstone inscription, that he died during the Battle of Iuka, and there was a question on the correct date. However, a Slay family bible indicates the following;

Family bible records states "killed by the cars near Iuka"
As it was passed down through the family, Cincinatus and another man had survived the recent Battle of Nashville (December 15-16, 1864). (This would have been part of Loring's Division). After their defeat the Rebels walked from Nashville to near Tupelo. Here was an opportunity to ride a train rather than walk. The wounded and sick were laid on flat cars. Cincinatus Slay and another man, being well, put a board between two flat cars since there was no other place for them. At some time after the train cars began rolling the board collapsed and he was crushed by the train.

Thanks very much to Tim Burgess for his bible information and settling a question on when and where Cincinatus died. May he rest in peace.

Honoring a 5th Great Grandfather and Grandmother...Jesse and Margrette Neville

Neville Cemetery, Walhalla, South Carolina

NEVILLE FAMILY CEMETERY, Walhalla, Oconee County, South Carolina

CEMETERY LOCATION:
------------------

Find intersection of Highways 28 & 183 in downtown Walhalla.
Drive 2.1 miles NW on Highway 28.
Cemetery is located on a hill, on the left side of the road.
Across the street from the Rocky Knoll Baptist Church.

Latitude N 34 46.385 x Longitude W 83 05.742

CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY:
------------------------

This pioneer family cemetery is located on a hill, which was typical for this time period.  It is speculated that the land was probably owned by Jesse & Margarette Neville and that Jesse started the cemetery  when Margarette died in 1838.  Over the years, the City has used it as a Pauper's Field.  Walhalla residents have also used it as a free-grave community cemetery.  If relatives of the deceased could find a burial spot in the cemetery, this is where the Funeral Home dug the grave without asking anyone's permission.  At some point in time, the City probably took the land for non-payment of taxes, lost their records and forgot what they did.  As of Dec-2002, the cemetery is full.

Four Tips for Tracing Your Ancestors Back to Ireland

special thanks to Larry for sharing the following tips for tracing your Irish ancestors ...

Among your biggest challenges in Irish genealogy research is identifying that specific place of origin on the Emerald Isle. Although the island of Ireland is about the size of Indiana, it can seem as big as Jupiter if that's all you have to go on. But if you learn all you can about your Irish ancestors in American records, with a bit of Irish luck, you might discover their origins. Leave no Blarney Stone unturned in your search, including tombstones. Here are some quick tips to get you started.

1. The Irish are known for including the county and sometimes the townland of origin on their headstones-for example, Bridget McNamara's Richmond, Va., headstone says she was a native of Kildysart, County Clare, Ireland.

2. Be sure to look for obituaries, death certificates and church records in America, as Catholic priests with largely Irish congregations might have included this information in records of marriages, baptisms or burials. But a place of origin can turn up in any record, so gather every document your ancestor might've created in America.

3. Expanding your search to all family members' records is key, too, as instructor Sharon Carmack learned when researching her great-grandmother Delia Gordon. Delia and her twin sister, Mary, emigrated from Ireland. Some relatives thought they were from County Cork. Records for Delia, Mary and their immediate families said only "Ireland." When Mary attempted suicide in 1906, a newspaper article mentioned another sister, Annie, whom Sharon hadn't known about. Sharon started tracking Annie's family, and her husband's naturalization gave Annie's origins as County Leitrim. Because of Sharon's lengthy search for the three sisters, she could give the County Leitrim Heritage Centre (part of the Irish Family History Foundation's network of genealogy centers) enough information to find the Gordons in church records. Turns out they lived in the townland of Ardvarney.

4. To find Irish Heritage Centres and learn what records they have, go to <www.irish-roots.net/counties.asp> . They're generally not open to the public, and they charge a fee for searches, but some offer records and indexes on their websites. If you're still coming up empty on the place of origin, broaden your search to people associated with your ancestor, such as witnesses to baptisms, deeds, and other records, as well as Irish-born neighbors listed in the census. Immigrants tended to migrate with and settle near people they knew from their homeland.

Learning the DNA Lingo

Learning the DNA Lingo
4/6/2016
Taking a DNA test for genetic genealogy research? We’ll help you understand some of the scientific terms you'll come across.
Autosomal DNA (also called atDNA or admixture DNA): genetic material inherited equally from mother and father. It's genealogically useful for ancestry back through about five to seven generations. Beyond that, you may not have inherited enough DNA from any one ancestor for that person to be represented in your autosomal DNA.

Centimorgan (cM): a measurement of the distance between genetic markers on the DNA based on the expected frequency of recombination with each generation. On average, one cM equals one million base pairs. In general, the more centimorgans you share with a genetic match, the closer your relationship (although individuals related through multiple ancestors also may share a high number of centimorgans).

Chromosome: a threadlike strand of DNA that carries genes and transmits hereditary information.

Genome: All the genetic material in the chromosome set of an organism. 46 chromosomes make up the human genome.

Genotype: The genetic makeup of a particular individual.

DYS (DNA Y-chromosome Segment): DYS followed by a number identifies a short segment of Y-chromosome DNA, also called a Short Tandem Repeat (STR) or a marker. A Y-DNA test reveals how many repeats of a particular nucleotide sequence are found at that DYS marker. For example, DYS390 is one of the most commonly tested Y-DNA markers, and values for the marker typically range from 19 to 28 repeats.

Genetic cousins: Individuals whose DNA test results match one another. You may have cousins who aren't genetic cousins—that is, you and your cousin don't match on DNA tests because you didn't inherit enough of the same DNA from the same ancestor.

Haplogroup: a collection of related haplotypes with a common ancestor. The haplogroup (also called a clade) is usually defined by a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutation that arose in an ancestor hundreds or thousands of years ago, and is found in all of the descendant haplotypes.

Haplotype: an individual’s set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or DYS markers. Males who are recently related through their paternal line will have similar haplotypes and belong to the same haplogroup. The more diverse two haplotypes are, the more time has passed since their most recent common ancestor.

Best of the Best Habits for a Highly Organized Genealogist

Posted by Diane
Why is organizing genealogy stuff perpetually challenging for so many of us? Maybe because finding new ancestry information is more fun than logging it. And organization isn't a one-way-fits-everyone kind of deal—the system and tools best for you depend on how your brain works.
But the pros will tell you that organizing is an important part of research. It helps you figure out how the new piece fits into your family tree and form conclusions about your ancestors.
1. Keep the big picture in mind. You can use genealogy charts such as five-generation ancestor charts and family group sheets to help you visualize how your relatives fit together, or try an online family tree builder with an app on your smart phone. (Find free downloadable blank forms on FamilyTreeMagazine.com.) It’s also handy to have a large working family tree chart, where you can see the whole thing at once.

2. Take charge of paper files.
Set up a filing system for family papers. Many researchers use binders or file folders arranged alphabetically by surname. Each surname folder holds papers from a couple’s marriage to their death, as well as any general notes. Children go in their parents’ folder, then get their own folder when they marry. You also might keep folders for towns or counties, with maps, historical background and local research notes.
3. Go digital. To save space in paper files and create electronic backups, scan photos and paper documents. Organize digital files with the same system as your paper files. Determine a file-naming scheme, write it down and stick to it.

4. Establish an organization routine.
If you regularly take short chunks of time to file stuff, it becomes second nature. Set up an inbox on your desk or computer hard drive for items you need to take action on (scan, label, etc.) and a “to file” folder for documents ready to be put away. Once a week or month, schedule time to empty these boxes.
5. Take advantage of tech tools. You can organize with tons of tech tools and apps, such as Evernote for tracking information and research findings, Calibre to manage e-books, Flickr for photos, Excel spreadsheets for checklists and logs. Find some of our favorite genealogy apps listed here.
6. Designate a workspace. If you’re like many of us, your genealogy workspace may double as a guest bedroom, dining room table or living room floor. Try to have a designated spot for your files, computer and books.

7. Color-code folders and files.
You could use a color for each surname, though you’d probably run out of colors before too long. I'd color code by branch with a different color for each of my grandparents’ lines. Color-code computer files and folders to match: On a Mac, click on a folder or file in the finder window and then click the down arrow next to the gear icon. From the drop-down menu, select Label and the color. PCs don’t have built-in folder color-coding, but you can download a program such as
Folderico.
8. Create a kit for on-site research. Prepare a bag with tools you might need for research at a repository: notebook, pen, pencil, money for the copier, flash drive, a family group sheet, surname variant lists, blank census or passenger list recording forms, etc. Now you won’t have to run around gathering stuff when you leave for the library.
